Scope and Contents

This collection contains research materials on the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey, and historical sites and figures related to the city including an abundance of materials pertaining to the House of the Virgin Mary (also known as Meryem Ana Evi, in Turkish, and previously Panaghia-Capouli or Panaya Kapulu) and often simply referred to as Mary's House. The materials in this collection are primarily photocopies. The photocopies include correspondence, journals, photographs, maps, and texts relating to the first two discoveries of the site in 1881 and 1891 through the early 1900s. There is an abundance of handwritten photocopied material in the collection which may be difficult to read.

The collection also contains Mr. Kefalidis' personal correspondence, collected articles, periodicals, and a variety of research materials dating from the early 1960s to 2008. The majority of the correspondence is related to Mr. Kefalidis' requests to libraries and archives for information on Ephesus, Meryem Ana, and related individuals and historical sites. He also corresponded with clergy members serving at Meryem Ana. The collection contains Mr. Kefalidis' publications on Ephesus and Meryem Ana, photographs from his personal trips, additional collected photographs, photocopied images, postcards, brochures, ephemera, and hand drawn and printed maps.

Biography of Yorgi Kefalidis

Yorgi Kefalidis was a researcher and freelance journalist based in Athens, Greece. He began researching the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey, and the nearby site of Meryem Ana ("Mary's House"), and related individuals and historical sites in the early 1960s. Mr. Kefalidis also visited Ephesus at least once during his research. He has published articles on Ephesus and Meryem Ana in L'Osservatore Romano, developed programming for Vatican Radio, and authored additional articles on related topics.

A large portion of the collection includes materials pertaining to the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana).
