Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of vhs tapes of University of Dayton events where Eugene August either participated or facilitated, day planners, once course booklet from the University of Hawaii, and several folders containing documents of Dr. Eugene August. Six folders in the collection are correspondences with August. Three of the folders contain documents pertaining to August's Personal Endeavors, ten folders pertain to U.D. and four of them are from his time as Humanities Chair.

Biography of Eugene R. August

Dr. Eugene R. August received his B.A. from Rutgers University in 1958, his M.A. at the University of Conneticut in 1960, and his Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh in 1965. After several years as an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Eugene August came to the University of Dayton in 1966, where he stayed for the remainder of his teaching career, with the exception of 1974-1975 when he taught as a visiting professor at the Unversity of Hawaii.

During his time as a professor, Dr. August helped establish the University of Dayton's Study Abroad Program and was one of the founders of the original CORE program, which is a interdisciplinary program for first year students that highlights different areas of the humanities program. His creativity and support within the university helped him become the first Alumni Chair in 1993. Eugene August held this position for several years, where he helped foster events like the humanities symposium and a dramatic retelling of Mark's Gospel.

Originally, Dr. Eugene August's area of focus was Victorian Literature, which later evolved into a interest in Men's Studies. He published several works, including John Stuart Mills: A Mind at Large and The New Men's Studies: A Selected and Annotated Interdisciplinary Bibliography. He also served on the advisory board of Victorian Poetry and was a consulting editor for theJournal of Men's Studies.
