Biographical/Historical Notes

This collection includes correspondence, publications, writings, and ephemera about Ephesus and St. Mary in Ephesus collected by Father Bertrand (Bert) Buby.

Fr. Bert is a Marianist priest and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton, where he teaches courses on Mary at the International Marian Research Institute. He is past president of the Mariological Society of America, a member of the Pontifical International Marian Academy, and the author of several works on the topic of Mary. Fr. Bert earned his his licentiate in Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and his doctorate in Marian Theology from the International Marian Research Institute at the University of Dayton.

A significant portion of the collection includes correspondence with Joseph B. Quatman (1916-2011), who founded The American Society of Ephesus (George B. Quatman Foundation) with his father in 1955. The society engages in and funds efforts to restore ancient Christian sites, with particular interest in those located in Ephesus, Turkey.
