Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials on circus-related themes, with the majority focused on American circuses. Included are 104 books, 2 VHS tapes, and an album with 8 vinyl records. There are also a number of pamphlets, posters, programs, clippings, and other ephemera that have been arranged in two boxes. The materials span 1907-2009, with the bulk dating to 1935-1965.

Biography of Robert Vandevander

Robert Vandevander was born on April 5, 1924, and he received his B.S. from the University of Dayton in 1953 and his M.A. from Ohio State University in 1959. He was a UD faculty member in the School of Education from 1960 to 1966. He also served on the City of Dayton Board of Education until 1980. During his senior year at UD, Vandevander began collecting circus materials, an area of personal interest. He continued collecting until his final acquisition in 2009.

Abstract

This collection contains circus-related books, magazines, programs, posters, and other materials collected by University of Dayton alumnus Robert Vandevander '53, also a former instructor in the School of Education at UD. Materials were collected from 1952 to 2009.

Arrangement

The books and VHS tapes have been entered into the University Libraries Catalog under local call number UASC 020. The remainder of the collection materials have been arranged in two boxes, one containing Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus programs, and the other containing ephemera and memorabilia.
