Knights of Lithuania records

 Collection
Identifier: CSC-037

Scope and Contents

The Knights of Lithuania records were kept as close to their original order as possible. The only changes made were the separation of formats for preservation reasons. The materials detail the ways in which the organization operated on a yearly basis. There are also materials that document the many meetings, pilgrimages, and newsletters that the members of the organization have participated in. The collection is arranged into seven series.

Series 1, Administration, consists of materials that document the yearly administrative duties of the members, councils, and committees. Within this series are convention meeting minutes, financial reports, newspaper clippings, convention programs, fliers, newsletters, and trip records.

Series 2, Membership Cards, consists of the membership records kept by the organization throughout the years. This series contains an abundance of demographic information regarding the members, including deceased members.

Series 3, Badges, consists of badges collected by members of the organization from annual meetings. These include ribbons along with buttons and pins.

Series 4, Audiovisual Materials, consists of materials that document music, performances, and photographs from 1986-2011. This series includes cassette tapes, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, film, slides, and piano music.

Series 5, Scrapbooks, consists of member-created scrapbooks that house photographs, clippings, and writings consistent with the views and beliefs of the organization.

Series 6, Books, consists of both books collected by members of the organization throughout its history, and ledger books created to keep records for different councils, districts, and committees.

Series 7, Oversized Materials, consists of all materials that would not fit into folders and boxes. There are multiple framed photographs, panoramic photographs, large flags, oversized artwork, and a box of miscellaneous items.

History of the Knights of Lithuania

The Knights of Lithuania was established in 1913, as an organization for Catholic Lithuanian youths in America. Early on in the organization's history, it included a basketball league, theatre troupe, and year round events in which the younger generations of Lithuanian-Americans could stay active. As time progressed, the organization's goals shifted to focus on preserving Lithuanian culture for all Lithuanian-Americans. This goal was especially relevant during the Cold War. Although the organization included members outside of youths, their focus has remained on handing down their beliefs and focusing on education for their youth through scholarships. The Knights of Lithuania are an active community of Americans trying to preserve heritage through community, education, outreach, and religion.
