Scope and Contents

This collection contains five Marian activity program booklets created by the Franciscans (Order of Friars Minor). The programs were organized by scholastic units of the Province of the Immaculate Conception (New York, N.Y.) from 1959-1964. The booklets outline day or evening programs during each liturgical year and include brief talks or papers given during the programs. Programs were primarily held at Franciscan seminaries in the Northeast region of the United States, but also included some national and international locations. The themes covered during each scholastic year were selected by the Franciscan National Marian Board and include: Mary and Church Unity (1959-1960), St. Bernadine of Siena and Mary (1960-1961), Mary in Sacred Scripture (1961-1962), Mary and Reunion (1962-1963), and Mary and Ecumenism (1963-1964). The collection documents Franciscan study and teaching related to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the early 1960s.

History of the Franciscan National Marian Commission

The Franciscan National Marian Commission was established in 1947 in the United States and constitutes an organized movement within the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). It is a branch of the Franciscan Marian Commissions which include the Central Franciscan Marian Commission based in Rome, National Commissions, and Provincial Commissions.

The objectives of the Franciscan National Marian Commission were to promote Marian congresses, institutes, studies, and centers, and to sponsor the publication of The Marian Era from 1960-1976. Members were urged to promote activities on a national level and in their own provinces including, programs of scholarly papers, Marian Days, forums, study groups, and publication of articles.

The Province of the Immaculate Conception was founded in New York by Friar Panfilo da Magliano dei Marsi in 1855. The friars minister throughout New York, New England, Toronto, Canada and parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Florida; along with missions in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala including parishes, schools, retreat centers.
